Purpose of our Board

 

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting SASCU's strategic direction. It accomplishes this by ensuring commitment to sound governance and risk management practices.

 
 

 

Dave Witt, Board Chair

(2017 – Current), CUDA Program Graduate & ACCUD

"I hope to play a role in advocating for safe expansion within the digital world while also supporting the needs of those more comfortable with face-to-face transactions."

Dave holds a Bachelor of Education degree specializing in Commerce and English and an Educational Master’s degree specializing in Science and Technology.

After 36 years in public education, Dave retired as Superintendent of School District No. 83 in 2013 and currently accepts short-term contracts from government agencies and legal firms as an educational and administrative consultant.

Dave also volunteers as a director on the Board of the BC Tomorrow Society, a local organization formed to assist future citizens in the exploration of sustainability when considering land-use decisions.
 

 

Constance Ladell, Board Vice Chair

Constance Ladell retired from the position of General Counsel to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. During her 12 years of practicing corporate law at BCLC, she gained considerable experience; notable areas of her expertise include regulatory compliance, risk management, anti-money laundering obligations, privacy, online commerce, major IT contracting, public sector procurement and corporate governance.

Constance has board experience in both the non-profit and corporate sectors, including the Kamloops YM-YWCA, the Kamloops Symphony and member of the Community Council of the Kamloops SPCA. In 2010 she received a ministerial appointment to the Board of the Inter-Provincial Lottery Corporation where she became Chair and led the organization through a significant change in senior management and also chaired the Governance Committee.

 


June Stewart, Board Secretary

(1986 – 2016; 2022 – Current), CUDA Program Graduate

June was first elected a SASCU Board Director in 1986, following a nine-year career with SASCU.

During her 30 years of service, she was a member on all committees in all roles, including Board Chair and Vice Chair and recently retired as the Executive Director for Shuswap Children’s Association with 20 years’ experience as a business analyst.

June served on the City of Salmon Arm’s Official Community Plan review committee and was one of the first in the country to qualify with an ACCUD, the Accredited Canadian Credit Union Director designation from the CU Institute of Canada and Dalhousie University.
 

 

Curtis Slingerland, Board Director

(2022 – Current), CUDA Level A

"I am eager to contribute to the community and admire the great work that SASCU does to better the lives of its clients, members, and community."

Curtis and his family relocated from Terrace to Salmon Arm in 2020. He worked  for the local Canadian Mental Health Association as the Manager of Property Services and Operations and oversaw the affordable housing program. 

Recently appointed as Chief Administrative Officer for the Central Coast Regional District, Curtis has a wealth of experience in governance.  He is a life-long learner, with a degree in Political Science, followed by multiple certificates in public administration, service delivery and regulatory matters. 

Curtis is eager to contribute to the community and admires the great work that SASCU does to better the lives of its clients and community.
 


Dawn Dunlop, Board Director

(2021 – Current), CUDA Level A

Dawn Dunlop is the Executive Director of Canadian Mental Health Association – Shuswap/Revelstoke branch and the Shuswap Independent Living Association. Dawn has over 30 years’ experience in the government and non-profit sector in both rural and urban settings and has expertise in developing and operating affordable housing. She is an entrepreneurial, results oriented, highly motivated strategic thinker. The skills and knowledge she brings to the SASCU Board include Leadership, HR, Governance, Financial Literacy, Organizational and Community Development, having served on multiple Boards including the BC Non Profit Housing Association, Salmon Arm Economic Development Society and the Shuswap Community Resources Co-operative.

Dawn holds degrees in Psychology, Non-Profit Leadership, and Marriage and Family Therapy, and completed her Master’s in Leadership from Royal Roads University. She is passionate about working in community and enjoys the innovative, collaborative, and creative solutions that result from working together, while staying true to her values and grounded in the vision and mission of the work. Dawn and her family have resided in the Shuswap for over 20 years, where she enjoys hanging out on her hobby farm with her kids and animals and exploring our trails. 

 


Ken Rogers, Board Director

(2023 – Current)

Ken is a retired professional accountant and businessperson. His professional roles included President, CFO and VP for several publicly traded companies, owner of small businesses, plus business consultant for private, public and government clients. Ken brings strong hands-on experience in regulatory compliance, business planning, board governance and risk management.

Ken was an active member of Vancity Credit Union. He saw firsthand the value that credit unions bring to a community - where decisions are made locally, and the benefits remain within the community. Ken brings his passion, training, and experience to the SASCU Board to support the development of a prosperous and livable community within the Shuswap.
 

 

Riley Boudreau, Board Director

(2024 - Current)

Riley is a 32-year-old serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, and leader locally and globally. In Salmon Arm, Riley volunteers with the Dinner Rotary Club, and has managed Salmon Arm waterslides, volunteered with South Canoe Outdoor School and led the Grindrod School Sustainable Agriculture project.

Riley has focused much of his career around his entrepreneurial ability to leverage technology and engage with experts to make an exponential impact while on a minimal budget. Four years ago, Riley was on the leadership team of a cutting-edge robotics company, acting as a driving force in evolving the business model to identify a market need matched with the company’s strengths, eventually landing on automated mushroom picking. The company is now entirely focused on this niche.

In 2022, Riley founded a 45,000 sq. ft nutraceutical mushroom farm (think Lion’s Mane), growing legal superfood mushrooms that have a phenomenal impact against today’s various chronic diseases.
Globally, Riley’s largest impact was launching Stand with Nepal Charity, rebuilding Khari Village District after it was struck by the 2015 earthquake, rebuilding 83 houses, 3 schools, a community hall, and supplying mosquito nets, medicine, and running blood drives.

Riley sees himself helping SASCU advance their strength in Digital & Technology, to keep up with the next generation’s expectations for seamless digital experiences (now a major decision-making driver for choosing services like banking). With a collaborative mindset, he is a creative thinker that has proven to work well with teams of diverse backgrounds to find and execute pivotal opportunities. Riley is eager for the opportunity to serve SASCU with his hard-earned experience set.

 


Steven DeBoer, Board Director

(2024 – Current)

Steven has lived and been involved in the Salmon Arm community for over 20 years. He has over 10 years of executive board experience, including roles as President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. Steven was involved in starting the radio station CKVS 93.7: Voice of the Shuswap and has been a longstanding volunteer and board member of the Shuswap Agricultural Association (formerly The Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake Agricultural Association) operating the Salmon Arm Fair as Vice-President, Treasurer, and President. He also served as Treasurer of the Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce, as a Mentor and Organizer of the Shuswap’s Launcha-Preneur program, and as a Trustee for the Salmon Arm College Scholarship Fund and Okanagan College Regional Advisory Council.

Steven is a finance and accounting professional and a member in good standing of the Chartered Professional Accountants of B.C., with over 10 years of experience. He has experience in public accounting at Deloitte Calgary and locally at Grant Thornton LLP. Steven has worked in insurance, business valuations, personal and corporate tax, and small business practice. His experience includes work on Canadian Chartered banks. He is currently the Director of Finance and Business Operations at the local robotics company 4AG Robotics Inc., which just completed the largest Agritech financing in Canada in 2023. 

Steven has demonstrated a strong record of progressive advancement, with responsibilities including project management, people management, and strategic leadership. Steven utilizes an inquiry style to encourage people to collaborate and reach consensuses while avoiding groupthink.

 

Tanja Carlson, Board Director

(2023 – Current)

Tanja has been employed with Community Futures Shuswap for 20 years and served as the Business Development Officer since 2008. She enjoys the role it plays in the community to provide business advisory services and financing to new and existing entrepreneurs in the Shuswap region. Tanja has strong business acumen and analytical skills and brings her knowledge to the SASCU Board of Directors and its members. Through her work delivering advice and growth strategies for new and existing businesses, Tanja has played a part in the success of countless businesses throughout the communities of the Shuswap and gained extensive experience in project implementation and management.

Her volunteer work has included being a director for the Shuswap Association for Community Living, the Downtown Improvement Association and judging for 4-H speech competitions. She is a strong community supporter and admires the contributions SASCU makes in the community to make it a better place to live, work and play.
 

Meet our Executive Leadership Team (ELT)

 

 

​Barry Delaney

President & Chief Executive Officer

​Barry has been the President & Chief Executive Officer of SASCU since he moved his family from Abbotsford in the spring of 2016. He is an active member of this community, past director of Salmon Arm Economic Development Board, Chair of the Brand Leadership Team and member of the Housing Task Force. A long-time supporter of post-secondary education, Barry is the retired Chair of the Board of Governors for the University of the Fraser Valley. Barry currently is a director on the Central1 Board, a large organization that provides back office services to credit unions across Canada.

Prior to SASCU, Barry held senior leadership positions as the interim CEO Northern Savings Credit Union, SVP First West Credit Union, CIBC and HFC. Barry holds an MBA from Queens University and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary. Immediately after graduating from university, Barry worked for one year in Denmark at the LEGO toy company in their Marketing department. This is the only professional achievement of which his children are proud.

Barry has a passion for aviation and holds a commercial pilot’s license and instrument rating. He lives with his wife Ramona, in Salmon Arm with three of their seven children.

 

 

​Julie Langham Wall

Chief Operating Officer

Julie Langham Wall, MBA, joined SASCU in 2011 as Vice President, Sales & Service, after previously building career success in the financial services industry including serving as Regional Manager of Libro Credit Union in London, Ontario. Julie will continue to lead all business lines of SASCU operations, along with marketing and community engagement. Julie will also oversee the development of the member experience and service delivery throughout the organization.

 

 

​Tom O'Connor

Vice President, Technology Operations

​Tom O’Connor leads the overall technology function at SASCU. In his role as Vice President, Digital & Technology, Tom is part of two main teams; the IT Department and the Executive Leadership Team. On the technical front, he is responsible for the on-going health and security of different core systems at SASCU such as RFS360 Banking, email and the ACE CRM environment. He also is the ‘point-person’ for bringing emerging IT issues and opportunities to both the ELT and the Board of Directors. 

Tom recently completed his MBA with Distinction at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland where he and his family lived most recently before relocating to Kelowna in 2007. Prior to plying his IT skills in a Scottish brewery (yes, really), Tom worked in various professional organizations in his hometown of Montreal following his graduation from McGill University.

 

 

Darren Bryce

Vice President, Finance

Darren Bryce leads the finance team as SASCU's Vice President, Finance.

Darren first joined SASCU as the Controller in 2020. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Laurentian University and the CPA Designation. He has more than 15 years’ experience in the financial industry, include leadership roles in finance and treasury at two other Credit Unions in Manitoba. 

Darren and his wife, Cydney, live in Salmon Arm with their three boys. Outside of work, Darren celebrates the outdoors with activities including snowboarding, skiing and running. 

 

 

Joanna Markin

Vice President, People & Culture

With over 30 years of experience in Human Resources, Joanna Markin is a seasoned professional specializing in people management, organizational culture, and corporate development. Currently serving as Vice President of People and Culture at SASCU, Joanna plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s HR strategies, aligning them with the organization's broader vision. 

In Joanna’s previous role with Coastal Community Credit Union, she was able to further hone her leadership in HR practices and employee development. Prior to this, she worked as Director of Human Resources, Corporate Safety, and Technology at the City of Nelson for 14 years. During her tenure, she led numerous initiatives to enhance employee engagement, streamline HR processes, and foster a safety-conscious work environment. Her expertise in overseeing technology integrations within HR functions also contributed to modernizing the city's operations. 

At SASCU, Joanna focuses on developing, implementing, and administering HR and training policies, programs, and systems. She is passionate about cultivating a work culture that reflects the organization's values and fosters employee success. As a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR), she is committed to leading teams that prioritize people, ensuring they’re able to thrive personally and professionally. 

Born and raised in Nelson, BC, Joanna is also a proud mother of two boys and two girls. With lots of family in the Okanagan, she cherishes spending time with her adult children and enjoying the moments they share together. Family is at the heart of everything she does. 

 

 

​Kelly Bennett

Vice President, Strategy & Partnerships

Kelly Bennett is a seasoned financial professional with over 20 years of experience in financial management and leadership. A Chartered Accountant (CA) since 2004, Kelly has built a career that spans various roles and industries. Kelly started her career in Abbotsford with MNP LLP and then moved back to her hometown of Salmon Arm in 2011 to work with BDO Canada. Subsequently, she served as the Chief Financial Officer for the District of Sicamous for nine years, overseeing the district’s financial operations and strategies and then transitioned into the role of Chief Administrative Officer for an additional two years.   

She previously served as a Director with SASCU and the District of Sicamous Development Corporation. Currently, Kelly serves as the Vice President of Strategy and Partnerships at SASCU, where she leverages her background to drive strategic initiatives and foster key partnerships.  

In her free time, she enjoys playing outdoors and enjoying the beauty of the Shuswap with her husband and two daughters, whether on a ski hill or on the lake.
